Technology Business Strategy
Leading the Way for Next-Generation Technologies for a Carbon-Neutral Society.
Achieving a low-carbon society, and beyond...
The environment surrounding resource development is currently shifting drastically.
JOGMEC/TRC has established a new “Technology Business Strategy” to continue contributing to the stable supply of resources and energy in Japan.
Contribution to Energy Security
Contributions to the Realization of a Low-Carbon Society
With one of its missions being the stable supply of resources and energy to Japan, JOGMEC/TRC has been a base for research and development that meets the technical needs of oil and gas development. Furthermore, various social problems, which arise with the development and consumption of hydrocarbon resources (e.g., global warming), have become readily apparent, and there is a growing need to reduce the environmental impact.
We are attempting to build a new business model alongside Japanese oil and gas development companies by utilizing the knowledge and technology cultivated during oil and gas development. We have set “contributions to the realization of a low-carbon society” as the first pillar of our Technology Business Strategy, and are focusing on initiatives of “resource development CCS operations,” “research and development of low-environmental load technologies,” and “involvement in creating new resources from hydrocarbons and building low-carbon energy value chains.”
Pursuit of New Possibilities in Resource Development
As seen in the Shale Revolution, oil and gas development has achieved “cost reductions,” “improved productivity,” and “increased reserves” by successfully incorporating new perspectives and ideas. Emphasizing these perspectives and ideas, JOGMEC/TRC, as a research institution, will establish further advances during the “pursuit of new possibilities in resource development” as the second pillar of the Technology Business Strategy, and strengthen technical support for the “pursuit of digital technology possibilities and the creation of new business areas by utilizing its ripple effects” and “tight oil/gas development.” Simultaneously, we are attempting to establish a technological base toward the realization of the “commercialization of methane hydrates” that exist in the sea area around Japan.
Maintenance and Strengthening of Core Technologies
While advancing new technology development and technical support, JOGMEC/TRC is strengthening its role as an institution for accumulating human resources and knowledge in various specialized fields (e.g., geology, geophysics, drilling technology, reservoir engineering, geomechanics, and facility technology) and a national institution that provides technical support/problem-solving/business reviews related to oil and gas development. Therefore, we are advancing the “maintenance and strengthening of core technologies for technical support and the evaluation of exploration development” as the third pillar of the Technology Business Strategy to create an environment where researchers and engineers can concentrate on their work.
We are leading the way for next-generation technologies toward the realization of a carbon-neutral society through the promotion of our Technology Business Strategy. We will also provide value-added solutions to oil and gas development companies and contribute to society in the energy resource fields to ensure energy security in Japan.
Message
The oil and gas development business is changing because of major impacts, such as global energy demand fluctuations caused by the COVID-19 crisis and energy discussions triggered by global warming. We believe that, as the surrounding environment rapidly continues to shift in the future, the mission of JOGMEC is to ensure and maintain a stable supply of energy to Japan. To that end, we will fully support the response to climate change and further evolve our technology development support. Specifically, we will contribute to increasing the efficiency of oil and gas fields and the continuation of stable operations by applying digital technology, developing and applying unconventional resource development technology, and further strengthening basic technologies related to exploration evaluation/development and production. Additionally, we are actively advancing technology development and support towards the goal of carbon neutrality. The Technology Business Strategy of JOGMEC/TRC has been reviewed to realize effective support based on the needs of related institutions and companies. We will continue to support the development of technology and projects in collaboration with stakeholders worldwide.
We have also newly established the Carbon Neutral Promotion Headquarters and announced the “Carbon Neutral Initiative” consisting of three basic policies and a specific action plan to accelerate the overall initiatives of JOGMEC toward carbon neutrality.
