Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia

Produce Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia from Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons, such as natural gas, can be used as feedstock to produce hydrogen and ammonia. There are high expectations for hydrogen and ammonia as future resources that do not emit CO2 during combustion (e.g., power generation).

Clean Hydrogen/Ammonia Promotion Business

JOGMEC will promote the creation of new resources from hydrocarbons and the construction of its value chains with the goal of realizing a carbon-free society. We will expand technology development and project support with the goal of clean hydrogen/ammonia production alongside CCS and the construction of value chains (including supply to Japan), as a new form of a stable resource supply.

Message

Hydrogen and ammonia are indispensable forms of energy used to achieve carbon neutrality and decarbonization in Japan. Neither emit CO2 during combustion, and both are expected to be the future of clean energy and are considered as new resources in the Sixth Strategic Energy Plan announced by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
JOGMEC supports the hydrogen and ammonia projects of Japanese companies and has collaborated with them in efforts such as value chain projects that import hydrogen and ammonia to Japan as well as CCS projects required for “cleanup” when producing hydrogen and ammonia from hydrocarbons such as natural gas. However, with the amendment of the JOGMEC Law in November 2022, JOGMEC is now able to provide financial support such as investment equity capital and liability guarantees. We aim to contribute to the future supply of clean energy to Japan through these efforts. Furthermore, in April 2024, the Hydrogen and CCS Project Department underwent organizational restructuring to form the Hydrogen Project Department and the CCS Project Department.
To accelerate the efforts toward carbon neutrality, in April 2021, JOGMEC announced the Carbon Neutral Initiative, which consists of three basic policies and a specific action plan; and the initiative has been revised in line with the enforcement of the revised JOGMEC Law in November 2022.
