Carbon Capture and Storage

Store CO2 Deep Underground to Prevent Atmospheric Emissions

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a technology that captures CO2 generated from the development of resources, such as oil, natural gas, hydrogen, and ammonia, and permanently stores it in a stable manner deep underground. JOGMEC promotes clean energy development and contributes to the realization of Japan’s carbon neutrality by supporting CCS operations.

CCS Promotion Business

JOGMEC will utilize the know-how of reservoir evaluation technologies that have been accumulated over 50 years, and facility technologies that have been accumulated through demonstration-phase technology development to their fullest extent. Additionally, as a core institution of CCS in resource development, it will strengthen its support for CCS operations advanced by Japanese companies.

Technology development

Further technology development and improvement for applications of subsurface technologies/facility technologies of the JOGMEC Technology & Research Center (TRC) for CCS operations

Field applications

Implementation of technical verification and CCS business feasibility evaluation through field trials in Japan and overseas

Responding to domestic corporate needs

Solving CCS business issues of domestic companies and responding to technical needs

Worldwide cooperation

Network-building with domestic and international CCS-associated institutions

Message

There is a rapidly increasing need for carbon neutrality and decarbonization. The oil and gas development industries must continue to play an important role in the stable energy supply to Japan while addressing the demands for decarbonization by the international community. CCS, an important element for decarbonization, is an area where the oil and gas development industries have knowledge and experience. JOGMEC has established the CCS Group to support CCS initiatives by Japanese companies. The key technologies of CCS include areas where we JOGMEC have accumulated knowledge over many years, such as subsurface technologies related to CO2 storage stability and long-term behavior, and technologies for optimizing CO2 separation/capture/injection. We will promote the businesses for CCS promotion in cooperation with worldwide institutions based on the needs of Japanese companies.
